Home Built Around You: A History of Blackfoot Tipis
Andrew Pretty Young Man will explore the history of the tipi from the Blackfoot perspective, discussing how the tipi came to be the main form of housing that reflected a nomadic lifestyle, and how it is used and celebrated today. He will share his own family’s history of their tipis, speak to the designs and stories behind them, and more broadly how the tipi became the centrepiece of Blackfoot camp and family.

About Andrew Pretty Young Man
Andrew Pretty Young Man is a Tipi Owner from the Siksika Nation. He had a traditional upbringing and has a strong background in Blackfoot history learning from his parents from the Scalplock and Pretty Young Man families. Andrew and his family have been involved in many activities that preserve and share Blackfoot culture, including Elbow River Camp at the Calgary Stampede, for generations. His grandfather, Leo Pretty Young Man Sr., was the traditional chief of the Siksika Nation and a direct descendant of Chief Crowfoot. Andrew works at the Siksika Food Centre and in cultural education.
