The Beltline is the site of diverse historic buildings that reveal how Canada grew as a nation. This talk explores the histories of Calgary’s first immigration hall and the Dominion-Youth Provincial Training school at Lougheed House. One building was purpose-built, one was adaptive reuse; both buildings housed domestic institutions essential to immigration, social service, and welfare programs from the 1890s to 1930s.

Presented by Shannon Murray, Lougheed House Executive Director and David Monteyne, Professor at U of C’s School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape.

David Monteyne is Professor of architectural history in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at the University of Calgary. His second book came out in 2021 with McGill-Queen’s University Press, and is titled For the Temporary Accommodation of Settlers: Architecture and Immigrant Reception in Canada, 1870-1930.

Shannon Murray is the Executive Director at Lougheed House National & Provincial Historic Site. She holds a PhD in history with a dissertation that focused on turn of the 20th century urban planning and social reform. Murray also teaches public history and tourism courses at Saint Mary’s University in Texas.
